The kids are with their grandparents for a few days, so my wife and I took an evening to have a rare adult night out with some friends - and obviously we played board games.

First Everdell - this is a beautiful worker placement game. Forgive the stock photo, I forgot to take a picture of the actual setup. This is unique among worker placement games, in that each player progresses through the game at their own pace. All workers don't return home during the same step, each player can choose to progress to the next phase whenever they want to. You're collecting forest themed resources to build cute structures and hire absolutely adorable woodland creatures. You're building out 15 spots in your town, and occasionally building into other people's towns, as I learned the hard way. Awesome game, exceedingly beautiful. Will definitely play again.

And after that, I got to teach them Tichu! Tichu is by far my favorite game. Four player partnership game using almost a standard deck of cards. You're trying to play out the cards in your hand, while you're going out you're trying to pick up points. Only certain cards are worth points. I cannot talk this game up enough. If you're a couple and you want something to play with other couples, this game is PERFECT.

I got to play Roll Player with some friends last weekend. This was a cool dice drafting game where you're given a character sheet and need to match up the dice with the appropriate stats. There's also some monsters to fight if you're so inclined, and weapons and armor to collect for points. After that, we played a couple games of The Crew and We're Doomed.

I haven't forgotten about this blog... I've just been playing nothing but Tears of the Kingdom for the last few weeks. This game is addictive as anything - Go one direction for a quest, get distracted by something, while you're working on that you find a korok seed and another clue to something you were working on an hour ago... Oh look, a horse! Let's see what happens if you glue a rocket to it! And so on, until you've lost two entire days. But I did manage to put the switch down for a couple hours and play board games with some friends who came in from out of town. We're Doomed! which remains a favorite of mine. Got to try out Heat! Pedal to the Medal. This game was the hot game at the Gathering of Friends. I thought it was okay, but not as good as everyone was making it out to be. Fun for sure, but not "More plays than Ark Nova" fun. Right now I'm punching out Age of Heroes, where you get to play as a team up of X-Men and do various X-men related things to X-men bad guys. I expect this game to be one of those that I punch out, read the rules, and then never actually play. This weekend is Balticon. While I'm not going myself, I know a lot of my friends are attending, so I'm sure there'll be some great stories from that.
